Everything in the body is connected. This may sound like common sense, but many of us rarely give it any thought! Did you know that what you eat can have an impact on how you age? Today, I’m going to talk about how you can delay aging by consuming the most anti-aging superfood in the world.
For the past few months, I’ve been doing an experiment based on research by longevity scientist, Dr. Rhonda Patrick. She does research into ways to make feel and look better while living longer. Most recently, Dr. Patrick has been doing research on something called sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is an organic compound found in cruciferous vegetables, like brussel sprouts, and it has amazing anti-aging benefits. It decreases inflammation, reduces oxidative stress, relieves depression, prevents alzheimer’s, fights cancer, improves brain function, lowers cholesterol, and much more.
Sulforaphane’s ability to reduce inflammation does wonders for anti-aging in particular. Inflammation is the main culprit for not only physical aging, but internal aging, as well. Inflammation prohibits our bodies from functioning properly. If we can reduce our inflammation, we can both have more energy and live longer. Research has shown that there is no food on the planet that can provide as much sulforaphane as broccoli sprouts- which is why it’s such a powerful superfood! Just 140 grams of broccoli sprouts, which contains 60mg of the sulforaphane, has been scientifically proven to reduce the doubling rate of a cancer biomarker by 86%. That’s huge! Another sulforaphane study showed that given just 30mg of the compound to children with autism improved their brain scores by 34%. There have even been studies of sulforaphane in animals that have proven the compound to be as effective as the antidepressant Prozac.
The science behind the superfood broccoli sprouts is relatively new, but there is already so much encouraging information- especially when it comes to its anti-aging properties. I decided to test the effects of sulforaphane for myself. Every day for the past three months, I have eaten broccoli sprouts- and I have noticed such a massive difference inside of my body!
Eating broccoli sprouts is such a healthy, tasty, and easy way to delay the aging process. However, the sulforaphane in broccoli sprouts is released when you chew them- so don’t just swallow them whole! Another trick to increase the potency of the sulforaphane in this superfood is to freeze it. Dr. Rhonda Patrick found that freezing broccoli sprouts increases its sulforaphane content by 1.825 times. I’ve been adding frozen broccoli sprouts to my morning smoothies and can attest that Dr. Patrick is right! The extra sulforaphane makes me feel like I’m on a caffeine buzz. While it may take a while to notice the difference in your body when you eat broccoli sprouts fresh, the feeling is almost immediate when you eat them frozen.
If you’re interested in making your own broccoli sprouts to get your fill of sulforaphane, I have good news for you. It’s so easy to do! There are a few ways to grow broccoli sprouts, but I went for the easiest route possible. All you need to do is go to the store and buy a sprout-growing kit and some organic broccoli sprout seeds. Buying organic seeds is so important because you don’t want any seeds covered in toxins or chemicals. Sprout-growing kits have thorough instructions, but I also gave an in-depth demonstration on how to grow broccoli sprouts in this YouTube video. Growing broccoli sprouts is so easy that anyone could do it! The best part? It only takes 4-5 days for your broccoli sprouts to become full-grown!
After your superfood sprouts have grown, you just take them out of the sprout-growing jars, give them a thorough rinse, and shake off the unsprouted seeds. Then they’re ready to eat! This anti-aging superfood is absolutely delicious. My husband and I will go through an entire large jar of these broccoli sprouts in just a day! I guarantee that incorporating broccoli sprouts into your diet- and growing them yourself!- is the easiest anti-aging tip that you will ever find. If you’ve tried adding broccoli sprouts to your diet before, I would love to hear about your experience!
